ANTIQUE OAK SCHOOLMARM'S DESK This old oak schoolmarm's desk was purchased in 1905 by the Joseph Claus, Claus Grocery and Feed Store, Springfield, Illinois from a nearby one-room schoolhouse and used by three generations of Clauses to write up tickets for purchases until their store closed in the mid-1990s. How many years it was used in the school is unknown and would be only a guess but most likely quite a few years. This desk was mentioned in a front page article dealing with the store's history in the October 10, 2006 issue of the Springfield State Journal-Register . A framed reprint of various sizes of this front page is available on the paper's website, ". The desk is in remarkably good shape considering its age and history. Sadly, 3 of the 6 side drawers did not make it through a century of use, maybe even abuse, in the grocery/feed store. Fortunately, we know of a local craftsman who can make reproduction drawers for this desk if you would want them for a restoration. The desk is 46" wide, 24" deep and 48" high Shipping Shipping arrangements and cost are the sole responsibility of the buyer. We can deliver this to a local "pack and ship" if requested.
