For auction is a rhodium-plated TRIFARI pin in the form of flowers or buds hanging down from a bough. The flowers are formed from three shades of sapphire-blue marquise-cut rhinestones; small white round stones further enhance the larger blue stones. The boughs are channel-set with white baguettes, further embellished with more small white rounds. In addition, four more blue navettes finish off the top of the composition. The plating is in perfect condition, bright and shiny. The stones are brilliant and flashing, exceptionally beautiful both in their colors and in their liveliness. The pinback is straight and secure. The overall condition of this piece is vintage superb. The design was probably patented by Alfred Philippe for Trifari in the early 1950s. Despite a diligent search, however, I have been unable to locate the patent application. I estimate the age based on the style of signature, the materials, and the overall look of the piece. The pin is signed TRIFARI PAT PEND in block letters with a tall crown over the T of Trifari. Trifari was one of the largest and best manufacturers of costume jewelry in the U.S. in the golden age of the 1930s-1960s. Alfred Philippe was the chief designer who brought his background in fine jewelry to Trifari in the 1930s, creating a sophisticated, high-end look for the company that was its signature for decades. Many of its design are avidly collected today. To quote Julia C. Carroll ( Collecting Costume Jewelry 202 ) about Trifari in general: " The jewelry is well made, beautiful, and because of its long history, the prices of many vintage Trifari designs are affordable.
