This letter is in excellent condition....it is addressed to a George Smith Esq of Fredericktown , Frederick Co., Maryland. The writer is a George O. Toms who was presently serving in the Military in Texas. He tells of the fights his regiment had had against the Mexicans with Santa Ann attacking with 23,000 men at Buna Vista against Jackson's 4,000 volunteer force who out fought the Mexicans hands down. George goes on to tell what good fighters the volunteer force was .....because they are usually thought of as under trained. This entirety of the letter talks strictly about Military marchs (how many miles they marched and the battles they fought against the yellow belly Meicans. He also goes into detail how the regiment came across a wagon train w all the wagoners had been slaughtered and left to lie along the road and eaten by wolves. He made mention that his regiment broke through the lines of the Mexicans who had been supported by heavy infantry. They then retreated to Catareta. This letter is very historically important and is written from an enlisted man's point of view. I don't know what rank George had in the military. When the letter is opened t are two very small holes in the fold of the letter. Any questions, email me. I take check, money order and credit cards.....NO PAYPAL.
