Up for auction is a Late Classic Mayan circa 900 A.D. Masterpiece. An engraved deer bone with several mythological figures and glyphs. The main figure is shown in profile with outstretched arm and Jaguar skin cloth. See The Art of the Mayan Scribe, 1997, page 90 for similar. It is referred to as a "Old Dancing Way Spirit". I have seen this figure on other Classic Mayan pieces, and it always gives me the impression of flight. A second image on the opposite site is another God type figure. The proximal end is surrounded in glyphs. The bone is drilled 9 times on one side, 2 on the other, and once in the middle. It measures 8 1/2" in length. It was reportedly discovered in a Mexican cave. Lime deposits adhering to the bone support this archaeological context. This artifact is from an old U.S. collection and was imported prior to the 1970 UNESCO Convention. This caliber of Classic Mayan art is rarely seen on eBay and a more appropriate venue would be a NYC auction house. But it is, with no reserve!! Guaranteed authentic with any of the top authenticators.
