Origin: Western Mexico Circa: 300 BC to 300 AD Dimensions: 16.5" high by 10.375" wide by 7" deep Period: Pre-Columbian Style: Jalisco Medium: Terracotta Description : This majestic Pre-Columbian sculpture is from the collection of the noted American artist Clara Shainess, a past president of National Association of Women Artists. The photo of Ms. Shainess with the collection was taken in 1978. The collection was lovingly put together by her starting in the late 1940âe(tm)s. I have known the provenance of the collection for 50 years, as I am her grandson. Kneeling Woman Sculpture: This striking woman sculpture was placed in a tomb to keep eternal company with the deceased. Her gesture is traditionally one of mourning in ancient Mexico, and her lips seem parted in sad lament. In contrast with this attitude of grief, her voluptuous form recalls the sensual pleasures of the earth. Her unblushing sensuality offers the promise of renewal and rebirth in the afterlife. This blend of sadness and joy mirrors the essential paradox of human life. All original glaze and patina. Please refer to the photographs for the close ups of the archeological restorations. The restorations are all very old dating back over 60 years. Rich glaze overall with painted eyes, earrings, nose ring and necklace. The sculpture is sturdy and solid in structure. This fine example of Jalisco sculpture is in wonderful condition, given the age and period the piece represents. This has been in my own collection since the picture of Ms. Shainess was taken in 1978 . I will be posting other pieces from the collection in the near future.
