Jama Coaque Jama-Coaque Jamacoaque, ceramic from costal Ecuador 300BC - 400AD: standing figure (shaman, priest , musician or person of high importance) with ear and nose plugs and cranial deformation, wearing a loin cloth (can be seen in both front and back.) 6 inches high. Yellow and green mineral pigments are clearly visible with the yellow brightening the skin and the green emphasizing the jewelry worn on the nose and ears, as well as the necklace and arm bands. Both arms have been reattached. The right arm has a break at the wrist and the left (which probably once held a staff) has a break just below the elbow. The right hand seems to be holding a three piped flute which has some loss above the hand but is undamaged bellow. Around the neck is a the band necklace or collar. The head has been elongated and is topped with a headdress which is primarily a bandana. From the back the knot which attaches the bandana is clearly visible. Close examination of the buff colored clay reveals the sparkle of mica temper in the clay and magnesium deposits forming dark marks on the figure's head. The figure is standing and is given stability by a cylindrical clay prop in back extending from under the loin cloth to the base. This is not a tail as is sometimes seen in shaman figures who have transformed into Jaguars or Cayman. In Jama Coaque figures the eyes are sometimes "D" shaped and sometimes almond shaped. The eyes on this figure and basically almond shaped but you and clearly see the iris. The figure has some dark areas - firing clouds-which do not detract from the overall beauty. I've had this piece for about ten years. I originally bought it because of my interest in the Jama Coaque's neighbors the La Tolita ( also called Esmareldas or Tumaco) This is the best and most valuable of all the items I am posting. Guaranteed to be a genuine Pre Columbian Jama-Coaque ceramic figure. If you are not satisfied you may return for a refund, but buyer must pay shipping (30 day money back ) but life time guarantee of authenticity. If you have ever bought any ceramics from me before you know I pack beyond what is needed. If you're interested in pre-Columbian ceramics from Ecuador, I highly recommend that you visit : It is a virtual museum and the wonderful objects on that site are NOT for sale.
