A UNIQUE MASTER PIECE & EXTREMELY RARE. A Taino carved green stone inhalator of the "Cohoba" figure with a large head and face with strong realistic rendering with two curving tubular drilled across legs decorated with incised geometric designs at side, supported with squatted legs. (The inhalator has two drill tunnels down each upraised arm and going down to the bottom of the piece). It was u sed in the cohoba ritual for snuffing the hallucinogen roots. The figure emphasis on anatomy suggests its use in funerary rites or in the "Cohoba" ceremony as a representation of the Behique (shaman) who underwent a strict diet. Religion was an integral part of Taino life. The cohoba was a shamanic ritual in which the Cacique (tribe chief) and the Behique (shaman) mediated between man and the Gods or cemies, as a means of ensuring the well-being of the individual and society. Much of the paraphernalia involved in this ritual are some of the finest pieces of Taino art. Originally from the West Indies/Caribbean. Intact condition, remains of mineral deposits. ca. 1000 A .D. Measure: 4 1/2 inches long. (Archaeological item).
