We are pleased to present for sale this very old Polychrome, Pre-Columbian, Mixtec Tripod Pottery Vessel. Mixtec culture of Mexico. Dates to 1200-1400 A.D. Measures 4" tall and 6 1/2" across. Red and gray polychrome. Distinguishing carved figural monkey heads on the front. One leg has been repaired, otherwise in very good condition. Mixtec Culture refers, in general terms, to the people who lived in themountainous Mixteca Alta region of what is now Oaxaca state in Mexicoduring the Classic (AD 300-800) and Post-Classic (AD 800 to the Spanish conquest) periods. The Mixtec were agriculturalists with extensive irrigation canals; they also left a number of written documents called codices. The best known Mixteca sites are in the Oaxaca Valley, w the Zapotec capital Monte Albán is found.
