Here we have what appears to be, a pre- 1946 American Flyer train set. We rarely have American Flyer trains for sale - mostly Lionel so we can only report to you what we see about this set from looking it over. We acquired it at a local auction recently and do not know the origin or any history about it. All of the pieces are made of metal - no plastic at all. The only exception is the log car which has wooden logs - the rest is metal. The locomotive is a #565 - we do not know if it runs. There is a chrome support at the right front that is missing. The rear two wheels are chipped and need replacing. The rest of the locomotive exterior looks pretty good. It is a heavy piece weighing about 3 lbs. There is a matching tender - no number that we could find. It has simulated coal on top at the front. The tender wheels look to be in excellent condition. The tender has wiring and a lever underneath - not sure of the purpose or function. There is a #478 red/white boxcar with sliding doors which shows signs of wear but overall is in pretty good condition for the age. The original ladders and long round handle are all in there and in place. Both doors slide easily and the wheels are in excellent condition. The #482 log car and its wheels are in very good condition. The next car is a mystery - it looks like some type of automatic loading car
