ABOUT PRECIOUS MOMENTS ARTIST SAM BUTCHER
Samuel John Butcher was born in Jackson, Michigan on January 1, 1939. He was the third of five children who grew up in a very poor family. Most of Sam's childhood days were spent drawing and sketching under the dining room table. At a very early age his talent was recognized by both family members and friends. Because his family was so poor, drawing materials were hard to come by, so Sam's favorite place as a child was a factory dump near his home w he would search for rolls of paper to draw on.
One of Sam's fondest memories was when his grandmother would tell him Bible stories. He always had a deep interest in spiritual things and even from his earliest childhood, he painted scenes from the Bible.
During his school years, Sam was encouraged by his teachers. He studied hard and won awards, but all of that was not enough to fill the emptiness and lack of fulfillment that the artist felt inside. Then one night, in a country church, Sam heard the Good News of Salvation. He responded to the invitation and asked Jesus to come into his heart. Since that night, the artist decided to only use his talent for the Lord.
"One of Sam's fondest memories was when his grandmother would tell him Bible stories." Early in his Christian life, Sam became the staff artist for Child Evangelism Fellowship. It was while t that he learned how to study the Bible and, as he did, he grew in grace and in the knowledge of the Lord. As he began to grow spiritually, so did his desire to reach out to people with a message of God's love.
In 1974, Sam created his first Precious Moments drawing. It was 1975 when Precious Moments was introduced to the public.
But even the success of what he created did not satisfy the artist, because in his heart was a desire to honor the Lord by building the Precious Moments Chapel. Since the structure's initial completion in 1989, millions of visitors have come to admire Sam's work.
"It is my prayer," the artist says, "that through my work in the Chapel, I might share my faith with others and that the Spirit of God might touch the visitor's hearts and bring them to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, our Lord." .
