BEFORE AUSTRALIAN OPAL WAS DISCOVERED, THE AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN MONARCHY WAS THE LARGEST OPAL EXPORTER OF THE WESTERN WORLD. 'HUNGARIAN' PRECIOUS OPAL USED TO BE A MOST WANTED AND VALUED OPAL FOR CENTURIES. THE MINES WERE AT VÖRÖSVÁGÁS AND OPÁLBÁNYA, (TODAY CERVENICA AND DUBNÍK, SLOVAKIA). THE MAIN MINING SITE IS LOCATED AT LIBANKA HILL . D URING THE CENTURIES OF MINING, TENS OF MILES OF TUNNE LS WERE CUT INTO THE TRACHYTE ROCK OF THE MOUNTAIN , FINALLY FORMING A COMPLICATED MULTILEVEL LABYRINTH SYSTEM WITH SEVERAL ENTRANCES SCATTERED IN THE AREA.
MINING AT DUBNÍK WAS GIVEN UP IN 192 2. THEY COULD NOT COMPETE WITH AUSTRALIAN OPAL , BUT THERE'S STILL OPAL THER E. TODAY THE MINES ARE A NATURE CONSER VATION AREA, BE CAUSE OF SHELTERING RARE BAT SPECIES. THE ENTRANCES ARE LOCKED, AND MOST OF THE OLD TUNNELS ARE FLOODED BY UNDERGROUND STREAMS. IT IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO PURCHASE FRESH DUBNÍK OPAL, UNLESS YOU GO THERE YOURSELF AND SEARCH THE OLD SPOIL -BANKS .

DUBNÍK OPAL IS VOLCANIC, MOTHER ROCK IS TRACHYTE.
