is a fascinating piece of history - a land patent signed by
President Chester A. Arthur in excellent condition. ________________________________________________ This document was found in 2001, among my great grandfather's possessions, in a book, w I estimated it had been kept since around 1906. It is an excellent example of this kind of document, and even the wax seal is in fine condition after almost 125 years! The patent was issued in 1883, to one Peter Johnson of North Dakota, and finally registered in 1886. Johnson was the maiden name of my Great Great Grand mother, and Peter Johnson was my Great Great Grandfather. The document states the legal description of the property to be "the north-east quarter of section twenty four in township one hundred forty nine, north of range sixty one west of the Fifth Principal Meridian in Dakota Territory containing one hundred sixty acres." Township one hundred forty nine is now known as Forde Township, and is in Nelson County, North Dakota. Section 24 of Forde Township lies directly adjacent to the north west of the intersection of county roads 21 and 25, and the property lies about one-half mile north of this intersection, on the west side of the road. I've attached an aerial photo and the images of two maps, showing the property's location within North Dakota, Nelson County and within Forde Township. In the photo, this property is identified by the the rows of trees. A little research has uncovered some interesting additional facts about this document and its associated property: It lies approximately 65 miles WSW of Grand Forks, ND, and 1 mile west of Mannie Lake. It is located under restricted airspace; within 5 miles of several former Minuteman III missile silos. It is 60 miles NW of KVLY-TV tower - currently the tallest man-made structure in the World (2.063 ft) It is centered at approximately N 47' 42" 45" W 98' 24' 09", in an area of still sparsely populated land. (NOTE: the maps and satellite images are not part of, nor included with the auctioned item) The National Archives describes this document as: Document Nr.: 5162 Accession/Serial Nr.: NDMTAA 125874 BLM Serial Nr.: NDMTAA 125874 These documents were issued folded in the manner depicted in the picture, and will be shipped that way, safely and securely packaged, and sent USPS Priority Mail unless requested otherwise. Refunds ONLY if this item is not as described.
