Beautiful 1916 document hand signed by U.S. President Woodrow Wilson certifying that Henriette Billing is a patron member of the American Red Cross. Wilson was U.S. President from 1913 to 1921, and in 1913 he became the first U.S. President to be honorary president of the American Red Cross, establishing a precedent for later presidents. Billing was part of a prominent Cincinnati family that made its fortune smelting (using heat and chemicals to produce metal from ore) in Utah and other western states in the late 1800s and early 1900s. After her native German husband, Gustav, died in 1890, Henriette became one of the first women in the mining business. A daughter, Helen, married into the Wurlitzer family of musical instrument fame. Document is approximately 17 x 14 inches. It has a fold across the bottom and paper clip markings at the top corners. Purchased through the reputable Goldberg Coins & Collectibles.
