Over the coming months I will be selling an amazing (and very large) collection from a TCA member who passed away in 1976 - the entire collection has been packed away in closets since then. I am working with his family to get these trains to new homes and will be listing a lot of very impressive Lionel postwar, prewar, O gauge, standard gauge, tinplate, Ives, American Flyer, and a large number of accessories. Please bookmark my auctions as I will be adding a number of pieces hopefully by the end of this week. This was a very advanced collector and many of his trains were in superb condition. This one had me very confused for a while, then I realized it's had some cosmetic surgery done at some point! This loco started life as an 0-6-0 six-wheeled 1940-1942 #203 switcher, which was Lionel's entry level loco into their new world of "semi-scale" locomotives. The #203 shared the same body as the #1662 and #1663 switchers, which were 0-4-0 versions of the loco built to mimic Pennsylvania Railroad switchers. At some point, this #203 had its six-wheeled motor removed and it was replaced with the four-wheeled motor out of a 1662 or 1663, complete with the wonderful excentric rods characteristic of these locos.
