This document is 4 Folio pages on 2 leaves, completely hand written and remarkable! It mentions a Priest, 'Father Baltazar Velasquez' , with Martin de la Coba, and Gil de Villarubie, (all who 'live in the imperial city of Potsi') being given powers from Juan de Valencia so they; " may act in his name and charge and receive debts owed in gold, silver, jewelry, cattle, slaves and other goods from that city. Powers are also given TO SELL SLAVES ." This terrible document is dated 15, February, 1589 This document states that a Priest could charge a person "SLAVES" or receive "SLAVES" as though they were silver, gold or cattle. And he could SELL SLAVES! Four Folio Pages on 2 leaves Again we have a document showing a History of the "Church" promoting and taking part in slavery. As horrible as it is, it is historical fact. it is. Read it for yourself. As with other documents we have listed - this document contains much more information than we have translated thus far. Many of our materials contain details about a Slave's character, traits, descriptions of their past and ,most times tell w they were taken from. These are approaching 500 years old and the translation is a huge task. We are seeking someone to aid us in getting full translations of future documents. These documents were donated to support Missions in the US, Nigeria and Peru - Bid with confidence. A full 100% of your purchase will be donated . Some history of the slave trade in the new world: Over the course of the slave trade, approximately 95,000 slaves were brought into Peru, with the last group arriving in 1850 . They were initially transferred to Cuba but continued to Panamá w they were brought to the Viceroyalty of Peru. Slave owners also purchased their slaves in Cartagena, Colombia or Veracruz, Mexico at trade fairs, and they took back to Peru whatever the slave ships had brought over. Slaves were distributed between encomiendas as a result of the "New laws" of 1548 and due to the influence of the denunciation of the abuses against Native Americans by Friar Bartolomé de las Casas . Slave owners in Peru also preferred slaves who were from specific areas of Africa, and who could communicate with each other. Slave owners preferred slaves from Guinea, from the Senegal River down to the Slave Coast, because the Spanish considered them to be easy to manage, and also because they had marketable skillsâe"they knew how to plant rice, train horses, and herd cattle on horseback. The slave owners also preferred slaves from the area stretching from Nigeria to Eastern Ghana . Finally, the slave owners' third choice was for slaves from Congo , Mantenga , Cambado , Misanga , Mozambique , Madagascar , Terranova , Mina and Angola . In the year 1856 , President Ramon Castilla y Marquezado declared the freedom of the Afro-Peruvian ethnic groups and abolished slavery , beginning a new stage in history. Most of the Slavery Documents we have, contain what would amount to a disclaimer as to the Health of the human that was being sold. Some of them state that the slave was to be raised in the Catholic / Christian Faith. This is a sad statement of what to some believers thought was acceptable. Please allow us to state that we are not Spanish scholars, and this early script is hard to translate. As hard as we have attempted to properly translate the Documents we offer, it is possible that t may be a slight mistake in translation and/or date. All Documents are Guaranteed to be Authentic. We shall add documents on a regular basis. Please email us about this or other rare documents we have available. WE HAVE OTHER SELLERS HELPING US LIST THESE FOR THE MINISTRY.
