This is a LARGE, nice and early ,New England, bail handle painted pantry box. Actually out of a New Hampshire home and FRESH to the market! Measures at 11 3/4 inches across the top lid. Stands 6 1/2 inches deep. Constructed simply as most were. Not sure of the wood but the bottom is noticably a secondary wood to the sides. Wire bail handle with original wood rounded holder for carrying. The seam is held with small brass nails while the lid ring is attached to the top with "square pegs!" The old paint appears to be blue or gray blue in color with brown paint also visible. Condition: Great! T is minor wear at the connection point of the main seam at the bottom and a small sliver of wood is missing. The bottom shows normal wear and the shrinkage of the wood has caused a very narrow gap to appaer, seen in photo #2. The bail handle is intact and operates as it should. The lid has warped some from years of use. It sits a little off and rocks a bit when in place. The lid has also pulled apart from the outer ring but very minimumly, again I believe is has shrunk some over the years. With this shrinkage, 2 of the wood pegs have pulled from their holes and are exposed. And w the seam on the lid is nailed off, t is a very small piece of wood missing. I believe the body has been stripped and the lid did not get stripped of paint? Thus the difference in color, the base is dull paint and the lid has a more finished gray color? Or maybe they were married together many years ago? Who knows the exact history of these old antiques? None of these noted defects take away from the prestiegous look of this great old pantry box!
