Large Hand Painted Situation of America 1848 Fraktur in Hand Crafted Wood chipped Tramp Art Frame
This auction is for the hand painted Situation of America, 1848 fraktur in the hand crafted wood chipped tramp art frame pictured. It is large - measuring 17 x 22. This painting is my rendition of the well known piece of American Folk art of the same name. This large painting depicts the paddlewheeler "Sun" at its homeport in New York City. The view is most likely Brooklyn across the East River. The original piece was painted between 1848 and 1861 by an unknown artist. Not only was this a time of economic growth, this was also the year and place w the Declaration of Sentiments was drafted by Elizabeth Stanton. The Sentiments demanded equality with men before the law, in education and employment for all women. A tremendously important time in American history and for women's rights.
This is a one of a kind painting and frame that is inspired by my love of old frakturs and traditional folk art. This will be one of your family's heirlooms that will be treasured for many generations to come!
I created the painting by antiquing the paper (antique wash and faux foxing) and then painted the motif with primitive acrylic washes. This painting contains very rich shades of blue, brown, gold and red. It was then detailed with a dip pen, and then finished off with my unique watermark. The painting has been coated with museum quality varnish for non-yellowing and fade protection.
For this painting I created a one of a kind, tramp art frame using an old time wood chipping technique. The frame is built by using 3-4 layers of cigar box and/or found wood pieces, built upon a traditional frame base - Very sturdy. Once the pieces were in place, I painted the frame with barn red and detailed it with antique gold. I added flowing vines, leaves, berries and flowers to complete the theme and to make the painting pop. It was then distressed and antiqued until it looked like it had been passed down for 100 years or so. This frame was then finished with several coats of matte varnish; the dust cover was put into place and signed. It turned out absolutely beautiful and was a thrill to create.
This large picture and frame measure 17 x 22 and comes under glass with a hanger. This piece is ready to display in your primitive home or that of a loved one.
This is not a print but an original painting and one of a kind frame by folk artist, Angela Dow.
