Printed 1699, STOLEN BY THE NAZIS with Nazi stamps A Truly Remarkable and Rare Hebrew Book that captures the essence Jewish survival A Very Rare Book on the condition of the Jews in Poland, after the persecutions by the Cossacks This book comes from a collection of four Hebrew books that were recovered from the Nazis. One was sold two weeks ago on ebay and the remaining three are for sale this week. This is an original and valuable antiquarian book, over 308 years old and offered for consideration starting at $1 an no reserve. The Book: [Nazis][Hebrew Book] Ashkenazi, Gershon., Avodat HaGershoni. Frankfurt, 1699. Small Folio. Nazi stamps of the Reichsinstitut fur Geschichte des neuen Deutschland. Bibliothek (destined for the Nazi Institute for the Research into the Jewish Question) . Heavily worn and flaking as depicted, partial loss (repaired) to 9 leaves inc. lower portion of handsome woodcut t.p. VERY RARE. Even in his lifetime Ashkenazi was recognized as an authority in Talmudic lore, and especially as a most eminent dialectician. 'Abodat ha-Gershuni" (Gershon's Service), containing his responsa to the principal Talmudists of his day. The number of these responsa is 124; and they contain much information upon the condition of the Jews in Poland, after the persecutions by the Cossacks. It is especially foreboding that a 17th century book touching on the Cossack Persecutions (among the worst in Jewish history), should come to bear the marks of Nazi ownership. One may quote Potok on the Cossacks, translating a contemporary 17th century letter, to best observe the horrid parallels: "'They slaughtered eight hundred noblemen together with their wives and children as well as seven hundred Jews, also with wives and children. Some were cut to pieces, others were ordered to dig graves into which Jewish women and children were thrown and buried alive. Jews were given rifles and ordered to kill one another '" (Chaim Potok, Wanderings (New York, 1978), 445) A bookplate (not present inserted in some of the books looted by the Nazis in World War II and later rescued by the Jewish Cultural Reconstruction Committee speaks eloquently to the symbolism of this book. "This book, once in Jewish ownership, then looted by the Nazis, and now restored to Jewish hands, is a silent witness to the martyrdom of the six million Jews who perished Al kedushat ha-shem. May their memory inspire us to keep alight the flame of Jewish learning and Jewish life. " Postage is $35 via 3-4 day EMS internatioknal mail with tracking from my secong home overseas
It should be noted that this "Helek Rishon" (first part) was the only part published and the book is complete.
