I have collected western related items for 35 years but my children have no interest in the collection so I have decided to scale back and let go a lot of my collection by using ebay, much of it for far less than what I paid. Some things you hate to let go and this is one of them. It is a hand carved Stagecoach with five hand carved horses. There is a great amount of detail. I have owned it for close to 30 years. It was purchased from an antique dealer who over many years had sold me a great deal of high quality western items, including vintage western and native american art and percussion carbines from around 1850 with inlays by Native Americans, so this dealer has been pretty reliable. The story behind this stagecoach is that it was carved by a prisoner who was in a western Territorial prison. I was informed that it was carved around 1901 to 1905. The prisoner was in jail for Grand Larceny. I have tried to do additional research on my own but beyond what I have been told, there is not much more to go on. It is known that prisoners have generated income and passed the time by creating art, carvings and even toys which is what I think this stagecoach was intended to be. It is about 7 inches high and 10 inches long which does not include the extension that connects the horses. Each horse is about 5 inches high and 6 inches long and 1 1/2 inches wide. There are minor chips and repairs but it is in very good condition for it's age (see photos). It is really a wonderful item and I believe it's history. Sorry for the poor quality of the photos. If memory serves me correct, I paid $200.00 for the stagecoach 30 years ago but hopefully it can find a new home so I am listing it for far less. I have another carved wagon from the same prisoner listed so please check it out. Please check all my other listings.
