Great private letter to Lt William Flye Commanding the USS Benton from Acting Ensign James G Migler of the USS Osage dated August 16th 1864 and reads as follows: U.S.S.Osage Aug 16th 1864 Sir, I have the honor to acknowledge receipt of your communication of the 1st inst with enclosed reccomendation, in return for which please accept my sincere thanks for the honor conferred, and I trust that you may never, through word or deed of mine, have cause to regret having done the same. I also hope that I may be benefitted by the advice so kindly and freely given in said communication and shall strive whilst in the service of my country to perform my duty faithfully and creditably, so that when this war is ended and peace restored, I may look back over the past I have reacted with pride instead of having to blush for some deed that I may have commited. I am happy to hear that your health is so much improved, and that are again able for active duty, and I hope to be able to meet you on your way down to your command, which order I thought had been countermended. I trust that you will be both pleased with your command and station as Natchez is one of the handsomest city's on the river, and has a good circle of loyal citizens. I have had a pretty severe attack of ??? fever but have it broken and am much improved. Mr. Doughty was taken down this morning and is quite unwell at present having a high fever, I have also had a very bad eye not having been able to use it for near three weeks. I must now close. JG Migler Act.Ens.U.S.N. To Vol.Lt. Wm.Flye U.S.N. Comdg.U.S.S.Benton 3rd Diiv.Mis.River off Natchez Miss.
