Description: Registered by the pottery of T. J. & J. Mayer in September of 1851, "Prize Nodding Bud" is, according to Jean Wetherbee, one of the rare shapes in 19th c. white ironstone production. I feel very happy, tfore, that I unearthed a beautiful coffee pot / teapot in this pattern and am anxious to see what the collector community's reaction to it will be - please feel free to share with us your knowledge about this line of ironstoneware!Measuring 9 1/2" high (base to top of finial) and with the distance between spout and handle being 9" the coffee pot sits on a low, eight-panelled pedestal base and has a similarly shaped body with a provocatively protruding, curved waist. The band forming the piece's rim betrays the still strong influence of the earlier Gothic shapes on mid-19th c. ironstone design, their angular geometry successfully softened in this case by the playful lines of the handle. A sweet, almost true-to-life "nodding bud" finial and the embossed floral detail on the top of the spout complete the shape's decoration.The coffee pot is appropriately marked on the underside of its base with the pottery's printed signature in underglaze black, proudly naming the shape "Prize Medal 1851" and surrounding the English registry diamond for that year.
