The C. E. Probst Manufacturing Company made putters in the 1950s, casting the heads out of the precious metals gold and silver. They were probably made to become gifts and expensive wall hangers. Many of them were engraved with the name of the recipient. They are actually quite playable but the soft metal was easily damaged and if played, worth was soon reduced to only the value of the metal. American Golf Classics lists the value of the Probst Westpoint Sterling Putter as $1200.00 and having been owned by a famous person could increase its value. One of the auction photos for this item shows an ad for the Probst Putter, I don’t have the original ad. This Probst putter was purchased at an online auction from a thrift store in Charlotte , NC and brief mention was made of the name John Belk engraved on the back. After receiving the putter I researched the name John Belk and learned that he was a very famous resident of Charlotte who died in 2007. He was one of the longest serving mayors of Charlotte and owner of Belk Department stores and has a freeway named after him. I have provenance to show that this item came from Charlotte where he lived but no confirmation from a family member that he actually owned it.
