Pudao Chinese Spear Niuweidao blade Guan Dao Naginata A Known as the "horse-cutter sword", the pudao was historically used by infantry as an anti-personnel and anti-cavalry weapon: specifically to slice the legs out from under a horse during battle; though it was also used from horseback. The first illustration of this fiercesome weapon design was seen in the military manual Wujing Zongyao in the 7th century, dating this weapon form to around this time period. This weapon is essentially a broadsword blade mounted on a half-sized staff, combining the best attributes of sword and staff. The Japanese Naginata is based off of, and strongly resembles, this weapon. A heavier and more ornate version of this weapon goes under the name of Guan Dao.The broadsword shape attached to this pudao is a Niuweidao sword, also known as the Ox-tail sword. It is a blade with a quick curve towards the tip; the type of sword that was carried by rebels, martial artists, and common men in need of self defense. This blade is truly a spectacular example of the ox-tail blade. The blade has been cold forged and carburized for strength, leaving visible carbon on the flat of the blade. It has a double fuller on each side of the blade. The weapon is very well balanced both because of a full tang that extends the length of the the staff, and because the spine of the blade is tapered, thickest at the bottom and becoming thinner up the blade, keeping the weight lower, towards the center of the pudao. This makes for a very manuverable weapon. This piece of wood shown in the 4th photo was smoothly cut by the blade while the wood was free-standing. The cut is curved because the cut-off piece of wood was already falling as the cut was being finished. The full tang is lightly welded to the tsuba and more heavily welded to the metal ring. Three bamboo pegs hold the full tang into the staff. The tsuba is of a very simple, utilitarian design. The half-sized staff is made of hardwood that has been wrapped in a traditional pattern along the entire length, covering the three pegs. According to contemporary Wushu practice, the ring at the bottom of the staff can be used to attach multiple chiming rings or a large veil cloth, the purpose of which is to dissuade and confuse an opponent. This comes with a simple vinyl sheath with zipper closure that is sized to cover only the blade of the pudao. Sheath is not perfect, and is just to help protect weapon and bearer."I have personnaly made heavy cuts with this weapon and find it solid, servicable, and one of the best values I sell." KarlThis weapon measures 53" in total length; with the Niuweidao shape blade measuring 28", and the half-sized staff measuring 23.5 not including the bottom ring.
