For those who collect Regimental patches here is a "RAREST OF THE RARE" set of cloth patches from the famous Puerto Rico 65th Infantry Regiment of WWII and Korean War fame! All are Theatre made in Japan and South Korea during the Korean Conflict. On photo #3 there's a example of the regiments Intelligence and Reconnaisance section of 3rd Battalion Battle Patrol shoulder arch hand embroidered in cotton and felt type material. This arch was awarded to those attached to 3rd Bat and who participated in activities to gather intelligence on patrols near or behind enemy lines. On each side there's 2 yellow colored post with demon's head on each side depicting the 3rd's Battalion "Los Diablos de la Montana" ( The Devils of the Mountain) name as they were known to the Chinese troops they fought against. If you look up the history of the regiment you will find that prior of Kelly or Jackson heights incidents the 65th was one of the best combat regiments in Korea until rotation system, language barrier and discriminatory attitudes took its toll on the unit. The white and blue 65th Inf. Honor Guard arch was used in a Ceremony held in Korea when the regiment received the first Puerto Rican flag when the island became a Commonwealth in 1952 after a referendum approved by Congress. This insignia is hand embroidered with all probability in a local seamstress shop in Korea and was only used on this occasion so I believe no more than 20 were made and fewer in existence. The red and yellow Honor Guard arch was used by the regiment's Color Guard, also hand-made in Korea as the previous one described, to be used on combat fatigues during ceremonial events in combat theatre. The Puerto Rican composed regiment was indeed a proud one of its origin and history and didn't miss the opportunity to show it on its insignias as seen on the black and white insignia used in 1951 on left shoulder or on left pocket above the regimental maltese insignia patch is such was worn. You will notice the mispelled "Borinqueners" instead of Borinqueneers, the Regiment's official name in honor of Borinquen, the Taino natives called the island before the arrival of the Spanish Conquistadores. These insignias were unauthorized by the Heraldic division of Quartermaster Dept. and were widely used without any sanctions because it bolstered "Corps de Esprit" in the regiment. The last is a 4 different mismatched examples of widely used during Korean war shoulder Combat Leader slip-on's with embroidered map of South Korea. As the 65th Inf. insignias these were also unauthorized but were very popular among the Puerto Rican soldiers and and widely used on their Ike uniforms when on R&R's in Japan. Some of the ones I have here have stapples on reverse. In general these were manufactured in Japan and were made of felt material using cotton thread embroidery and bullion.
