(MILLERS FALLS) AUTOMATIC BORING TOOL No. 3 ARCHIMEDEAN (PUSH) DRILL WITH 1 MILLERS FALLS BIT c. 1915 Description: This push drill is an unsigned example of the Millers Falls No. 3 Automatic Drill. It appears to be a late step among many in the evolution of this boring tool after beginning with the Johnson Automatic Boring Tool of 1869 (sold by Millers Falls as early as 1878?), and continuied by Millers Falls using the Johnson & Taintor, Graves and Millers Falls names well into the 20th century. This chuck on this drill accepts the bits which Millers Falls called their "New Pattern" or "New Style" bits which had the offset at the rear of the shank (similar to YANKEE) and rounded "dimple" for the retainer (unlike the "V" notch of the YANKEE). Thus this MF "New Style" made them compatible and interchangeable with "YANKEE" bits. In their 1915 catalog Millers Falls gratuitiously stated that their "New Style" "also fit some other makes". They previously used the "Old Style" which had shanks with four straight-flutes. The one No. 7 (5?32") bit included is the authentic Millers Falls bit. Note the rounded retainer notch. The tool is nickel-plated brass, which is In excellent condition. Markings: No maker marks. Refer to accompanying illustration from Millers Falls 1915 catalog Size: OAL extended = 9.75" / compressed = 7.5" Vintage: c.
