This horse weight was made in the Putnam Foundry & Manufacturing Co. in Putnam Ct. It has beautiful smooth and clean lines. This weight is another rare one, as it has a great shape, has writing on it and also has the weight on the bottom. The lettering on the top is.. PF &M Co. Putnam Ct. The weight of 15 is stamped on the bottom. This particular horse weight is a smooth round shape. The weight , of the horse weight is approximately 15 lbs. Diameter is 6". The height is 3 1/4". T is a bar across the top. This hard to find piece of American History , used in the horse and buggy days, is a hand forged horse weight. This is a piece of iron hand forged usually at a local foundry, that was used to tether a horse. It was carried in a buggy. When t was no hitching post, the weight was attached to a lead rope. The lead rope was then attached to the halter or bridle and the weight was dropped to the ground. This was usually enough weight to keep the horse in place, until its owner returned . This piece of Americana, the horse weight ,was a common item carried in a buggy until the automobile took over as the preferred mode of transportation. Each horse weight is unique, as the foundry or blacksmith that made the horse weights,arbitrarily put the inscription on them. Sometimes it would be a farms name, the weight, the town, county or an advertisement. The shapes also varied. Some were round, square, beehive etc. Other common names for these weights is, tether weight or horse anchor. This can be used as a door stop, conversation piece, or a great gift for the equestrian. This is from a collection, that was written up in Yankee Magazine as one of the largest in the United States.
