This specimen measures 3 3/4" x 3 5/8" wide x 1/4" thick. This PYRITE is metallic golden-yellow radiating crystals, often referred to as a 'pyrite dollar' or 'pyrite sun'. It is beautiful and very shiny in the sunlight. 3 photos of each side are shown below, photographed in the sun. From Sparta, Illinois, USA. PYRITE Chemical Composition: FeS2 Iron Disulfide Hardness: 6-6.5 Crystal Habit: Isometric. Striated crystals: cubic, octahedrons or pyritohedrons, sometimes as 'iron cross' twins. Radiating, granular aggregates, concretions, mammillated and stalactitic nodules. Color: Pale metallic yellow to brass yellow, often tarnished with a brown film, sometimes with an iridescent yellowish-brown film. Lustre: Bright metallic. Streak: Greenish-black Fracture : Uneven Often Associated with: Quartz, Biotite, Albite, Barite, Acmite, Lawsonite, Andradite, Gold, Enargite, Acanthite, Chalcopyrite, Sphalerite, Galena, Pyrrhotite and other iron sulfides. Misc: Frequently pseudomorphs after organic fossil remains. Gives off a spark if hit with a hammer.
