A rare and fine near eggshell dish of the Qing dynasty, Mark and Period of the Xianfeng Emperor (1851 - 1861), decorated in Famille Verte enamels. The Magpies, the Deer, the Bee and the Monkey, Xi Lu Feng Hou in Chinese, are auspicious and are synonym to the Happiness (xi) in getting Financial Rewards (lu) and being elevated to the Position (feng) of a Nobleman (hou). Also, the Deer and the Lingzhi (mushroom) symbolize longevity and the two Magpies marital bliss. The short reign of the Xianfeng Emperor was a troubled one, the Taiping Rebellion started in 1851, resulting in the destruction of the Imperial kilns in Jingdezhen (capital of Chinese porcelain production) and very little porcelain was effectively made. It was also during his reign that the Western allies, led by the French, looted the Imperial Summer Palaces of Qingyi Yuan and Yuanming Yuan. This little dish, probably made during the early years of this very difficult time, still sports the hallmarks of the previous reign of the Daoguang Emperor, a very white glaze, thin and skillfully potted body and the ogee shape. The hand written four character mark is applied in iron red enamel over the glaze. This dish, measuring 12.8 cm across, 3.3 cm high and 6.4 cm across the foot rim is in absolutely impeccable condition with no chips, no cracks and no restoration whatsoever. A light orange stain in the center of the well is original to the manufacturing, probably some iron red on the decorators finger leaving a mark. I describe my items to the best of my knowledge, if in doubt please don't hesitate to ask questions and view the pictures carefully. I've been collecting Chinese and Asian porcelain for many years, all my pieces come from old European collections. Very low starting price with no reserve. I have listed a few items this week, please have a look!
