This piece is Pre - Ban ele pha nt i vor y, legally imported in 1950 into the US with all of the required paperwork by my Grandfather when he returned from duty in Occupation Japan. I would not deal in new i vor y, and am only selling some family pieces. My Grandparents had a wonderful i vor y collection, part of which they had inherited, and part of which they collected during their time in Post Japan during the Occupation. I believe this item was a gift from someone who found out about my Grandfather's collection. NOTE: Don't you just hate unpleasant condition surprises? I will always try to detail any such problems, but please, look at my photos as well. Not only have I spent an inordinate amount of time trying to ensure I get them right, but they are also an important part of the description. And remember please that in most of the details shown in the photographs are greatly magnified The statue of Fukurokuju is 2 1/4" tall by 1 5/8" at the widest place. It is made from i vor y, has a very fine grain, and was legally imported into the US with all of the applicable permits in 1950 by my Father. I have looked at it with a magnifying glass, and can see only a couple of possible flaws. One is that t is an area of dark in the tracery decoration on the kimono in the back view and the other is that t are some very small, darker spots in the i vor y at the bottom of the kimono in the back. These appear to just be natural to the material. They are NOT stress induced. (see photos). The piece is signed. Japanese kanji symbols have at least two different readings. The on-yomi reading (shown in upper-case) is based on the pronunciation of the original Chinese script when it was introduced to Japan about 2,000 years ago. In his evaluation of the signature's authenticity, the expert I hired states, "The kun-yomi (shown in lower-case) is the native Japanese reading. This means that the signature can be read in often more than two different ways! The characters that an artist uses as a signature is not his actual name. It is a go or pen name - a sort of nom-de-plume, which often changed with the artist's age, and also the quality and type of work being signed. Traditional Japanese script reads from top to bottom and from right to left. " I have also included the photos the expert gave me on the accented versions of Romanji (Japanese romanization) and Pinyin (Chinese romanization) variations of Koetsu's known go.
