This is a stunning sterling silver Antique Victorian circa 1890 malachite Scottish leaf brooch. I have collected agates in Scotland for over 20 years and know where most of the lovely gemstones that Victorians used for their classic jewellery were found. During Queen Victorias reign Scottish craftsmen used many different stones from all over Scotland to produce fabulous jewellery which the Queen highly favoured. Other stones including green malachite from Africa was also used by these lapidary ( stone cutting and polishing ) experts to produce stunning pieces. The malachite has a hairline crack but is very difficult to see unless under close examination. The brooch has no hallmarks which is fairly normal for pieces of this period, but has been fully tested and is sterling silver. The length is 3.8 cm ( One and a half inches ) and the C clasp and pin are in good working condition and original.
