Fine Quality Antique Victorian English Oak & Brass Letter Box A really delightful Oak and Brass letter box and most unusual having a hinged lid they are often just open at the top and this also has a removable front brass panel which is a fantastic design feature as this can then be easily removed for cleaning and the oak does not get stained by the brass cleaner !! The case itself is constructed from Oak which has developed the most beautiful rich colour and patina as you can see from the photographs it has been well care for over the years and dates from around 1890. There is a brass decorated panel bearing the word "Letters". In the front of this there is another brass compartment, I assume this would have been for either Calendar Date Cards or maybe a Card indicating whether it contained incoming or outgoing post. This would have been in the sole charge of the Domestic staff of the house who would have been responsible for the posting and distribution of any letters for the household. In Victorian times correspondence was a very important part of day to day life and was their only way of communication with the outside world and this would have lived in the hallway of the house and could be either wall mounted or used as a piece of table top furniture.
