FULL SIZE GENUINE Queen's South Africa Medal clasps Orange Free State, South Africa 1902 named 4887 Pte M Jackson E York Regt With copy service papers and 1911 census details.Matthew Jackson was born in Undel, Russia a 21 year 3 month old cotton spinner he attested for the East Yorkshire Regiment at Manchester 28 December 1894. Posted to the 2nd Battalion from the Depot 20 March 1895 he transferred to the 1st Battalion 23 October 1896. Appointed Lance Corporal 10 April 1897 he reverted to Private at his own request 19 February 1898.Jackson served in India 23 October 1896 to 16 February 1902 and South Africa from 17 February 1902 to 10 January 1903. Returning to the UK he transferred to the Army Reserve and was discharged from this 17 December 1906. The 1911 census records Matthew Jackson as residing with his wife Ellen aged 31 at 13 King Street, Royton, near Oldham, Lancashire his occupation is recorded as Cardroom Stripper and Grinder, Cotton Spinning Mill. Interesting recipient, his father Henry is recorded on the 1911 census as a retired Cotton Mill Manager residing in Hollinwood, Oldham, Lancashire with his wife, son and daughter both their children are recorded as born in Russia.
