The Catawba Valley of North Carolina is known as one of the Folk pottery centers of the United States. Potters settled in the Catawba Valley before the Civil War. This was the home of Daniel Seagle, Thomas Ritchie, David Hartzog, the Hilton family and many others central to the pottery movement in North Carolina. Sam Propst and the Reinhardt Brothers, Enoch and Harvey, started and perfected the use of swirl ware in the Catawba Valley region. Today, the majority of the Catawba Valley potters are concentrated along Highway 10, Southeast of Hickory, between Newton and Vale. Burlon Craig, one of the best known of the Southern Folk potters from this region, passed away in 2002. Steve Abee, Kim Ellington, Walter Fleming, Michelle Flowers, Albert Hodge, Richard Kale, Charles Lisk, and Joe Reinhardt (and others) all have potteries in the area. Richard Kale is the son of Harry C. Kale (born 1912) who worked at Casey Meaders' (of the famous Georgia Meaders family of potters) pottery shop at Bandy's Crossroads in the Catawba Valley in the 1920s. Harry Kale became a minister, and when he retired in 1977, Burlon Craig helped him get started as a potter. Richard is Harry's son and a well-known contemporary potter in the Catawba Valley.Up for bid is a 3-handled blue swirl vase by Richard Kale.
