A RENE LALIQUE CLEAR, FROSTED AND SEPIA STAINED GLASS VASE “CAMARGUE”
INTRODUCED SEPTEMBER 17TH 1942 Out for a bid one of the latest pieces designed by Rene Lalique at the end of his productive career. The fabulous vase “Camargue” introduced in 1942 and discontinued in 1951. “Camargue” is a massive vase that was in production for a short period of time and is not often out for sale. An imposing art glass piece with a naturalistic decorative motif of horses inspired by the French Camargue, a region famous worldwide for raising a fine breed. The thick flaring cylindrical frosted glass vessel molded at the lip and foot with wavy borders in high relief, framing four applied irregular medallions molded in low and medium relief, each featuring a rearing stallion set against whirling clouds of smoke or dust. Pale brown patina ( Marcilhac 10-937 ). A large, heavy and boldly stylized piece standing a substantial 11 7/16 in. ( 29 cm. )…an spectacular vase of magnificent quality…a quasi sculptural object d’art with great attention to the detail and a magnificent dynamic composition full of energy and rhythm. Some bruises on one section of the wavy rim ( please, see photos Nos. 8 and 9 below ) and two minor chips on the base professional restored at the highest standard otherwise in really great condition considering its manufacturing complexity. Priced to be sold at a minimum reasonable price. The last one for sale at auction fetched 18,000 USD. A late 1940s edition nicely signed LALIQUE / FRANCE. A superb Rene Lalique item.
