Radford founded The Radford Company with his brother, Stephen, in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The Radford's began milling lumber and soon began making architectural millwork for the construction trade. William Radford moved to Chicago and started the Radford Architectural Company just in time to influence the building industry with his Bungalow plans. Radford and his team of architects published books of floor plans, detailed blueprints, "Radford's Cyclopedia of Construction", and "American Carpenter and Builder" magazine. Books of floorplans with elevation drawings were sold to advertise bungalows designed by Radford and his team. One would order the blueprints and have their builder construct their home. In 1911, Radford published "Radford's Details of Construction" in response to queries from builders who were building Bungalows and other structures from Radford's blueprints. Builders wanted to know what interior trim details should look like, what measurements to use for built-in furniture, and a multitude of other details that were not listed in the blueprints.
