A Radical View: The “Agate” Dispatches of WhitelawReid, 1861-1865. 2 Volumes. Edited with an introduction and notes by James G. Smart. Frontis of Reid. Memphis: Memphis State University Press. V1-274pp, V2-228pp, index. 1976, first edition. Hardcover in mylar protected dust jackets. Covers heavily rubbed, edge wear. Reid as a war correspondent was skeptical, persistent, and a delight to read. He warns readers in March 1862 that whenever they read accounts of the surrounding of rebel forces, it was very likely to be humbug, especially when written hundreds of miles distant from the supposed military triumph. His letters on the struggle for the Negro are forthright, and a reminder that the objectives of the war were clearly enough understood to be about slavery.
