Radio Shack Tandy Model 102 Laptop 24k Vintage TRS 80 Thinner Than the Model 100 This is a WORKING Radio Shack Tandy TRS 80 Model 102 Portable Computer! And includes ... file transfer software that I wrote which turns your Windows, Mac or Linux computer into a Model 100 disk drive.When I was in college, I used the M102 to take notes. I saved notes to tape recorders, disk drives and micro-wafer drives. Unfortunately, over time, these drives are failing and disks are slow and incovient. So I wrote software that allows these portables (M100, M102, Nec8201, Nec8300, T200) to load and save files directly to modern computers.In this auction you get BOTH a fully functional Model 102 AND my transfer software.To use the transfer software you need an old-style serial cable. Mac OS X users and anyone with a laptop without an old style serial port, just need a USB-to-Serial cable. You will also need a null model adapter. If you need these, I can get them for you (for a little extra).The Model 102 is thinner and lighter than the Model 100. You get all the cool with less bulk. Impress your friends with 16 hours of battery life from four AA batteries. Or you can use rechargeables for eight hours of continuous use. I have lost the AC adapter, but they are easy to get at ... RadioShack ... or any other store.BUT imaging the fun you'll have walking into a Radio Shack store and asking for a 6V ac adapter for your Radio Shack laptop. Don't show the model 102 right away. Tell the sales clerk that you have an old Radio Shack laptop and ask if they sell AC adapters for them. They'll ask if you have the laptop with you ... which you'll produce from your backpack or laptop bag! Now you need to keep a straight face, and without missing a beat, place the laptop on the counter with the logo facing the clerk.Watch as their eyes pop in amazement. You'll almost hear the, "what the hey," they're thinking. Almost no one at Radio Shack is old enough to remember these laptops. They were super popular in the day and Radio Shack's best seller. Make sure you have some good batteries in the Model 102, so you can show them it powers on.I guarantee the clerk will think you are pranking them, but no, it's a real, working Model 102, with the, "Tandy," logo right on front. Just the fun of the prank will be worth getting this. And if you live in a city with multiple Radio Shack stores, the fun will never end. All the memory works and the portable powers up. I have played a few games on (I mean tested) this M102 to verify that everything is working. That said, I will exchange it if something gets damaged in shipping. Note: these are old computers and there may be some yellowing of the case and some light signs of use. Also, I will clean off most of the dust but there may be some old labels on the bottom or elsewhere that need to be removed. SO expect to do a little clean up.Thanks EricQ: what cable do I need to transfer software to the Model 102? A: The model 100 serial port would connect to a modem. When you connect computer-to-computer, you need to reverse some pins in the cable. This is often done with a second, small, cable adaptor called a Null-Modem-Adapter. So the M100 connects to a serial cable, which connects to a null modem adapter, which connects to your Mac or Windows computer. And that all is still true, except, today most Windows and Macs DON'T have an old style serial port. As such, we need a USB-to-Serial cable - which are easy to find. You attach a USB-to-Serial cable to the Mac/Windows computer. Then the null modem adapter attaches to the M100. Basically, you need one cable, and one Null Modem Adapter and you're golden. Q: is this in brand new pristine condition. A: Um ... no. These were made in the 80's and I will verify that it works and has no MAJOR cosmetic flaws. That is working, and cosmetically as-is. HOWEVER, If you want me to restore it to factory new, I will for $300. I'll clean it with a Q-Tip, restore the case to pure white, buff out all the signs of age. Make it pretty.
