This sale is an opportunity to BUY DIRECTLY from native american artist Harold Long,an enrolled member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in Cherokee N.C.In his mid twenties,Harold started to experiment with clay as a medium and became a self taught potter.He incorporates a traditional point of view in all his work,whether it is an old style,traditional or contemporary piece.This is NOT a poured ceramic or wheel thrown piece.It is HANDBUILT using the slab and coil method.Surface decoration and textures are created using different wooden paddles,incising and impressions with different tools.Buying a piece made this way and raku fired Guarantees that it is a one of a kind work of fine art.This vessel has been raku fired.Raku pieces are bisque fired,then glazed and fired once more outdoors until they are red hot.Then using a pair of tongs carefully removed and place in a smoke chamber filled with various organic materials.After a few minutes in the smoke chamber they are removed and submerged in water.Those that survive the thermal shock are cleaned revealing vivid colors.Areas that are not glazed turn black in color from the smoke.Like many other native artists Harold overcome difficulties and disadvantages by intense determination,will power and experimentation.This piece pieces blends a variety of techniques and qualities that are both traditional and contemporary.Harold Long still lives on his ancestral land on Jenkins Creek in Cherokee.He is from the Wolf Clan and resides in the Wolftown community.This piece is truly a ONE OF A KIND work of art to compliment even the most discerning collection. This contemporary vessel has blue and green hues with LOTS of high COPPER color.It measures approx.5 1/4 inches tall and approx. 5 inches at it's widest.The inside and bottom are unglazed and blacken from the smoke.It will not hold water and NOT for food use.The bottom is signed by Harold Long Please look at my other listings for more original and uniqiue pottery
