Payment | Shipping RAKU POTTERY - HORSE HAIR - WHEEL THROWN - STONEWARE An awsome piece of Fine Raku Art! This beautiful lidded horse hair piece was thrown on the potter's wheel and measures 9 1/2" tall (5 3/4" without cap and horn) by 8 1/2" wide. After being hand burnished this piece was sprayed with various underglaze colors to enhance the shape and beauty of the piece. Fired to 1500 degrees F, the piece was then removed from the hot kiln and the horse hair applied. A super unique piece of pottery!! The cap and horn were given a heavy reduction during the post firing turning them jet black. The horn is attached with bright copper wire that enhances the colors adding character. An elegant piece that will enhance any collection or a pleasing gift for a friend. My horse hair pieces are second to none in quality and craftsmanship. Each piece is meticulously handmade and handled between 25 to 30 times before the piece is finished, producing a museum quality piece of Raku Art!! A unique and unusual gift to give this Christmas! All my pieces are 'one-of-a-kind' hand made originals. Couple that with the unpredictability of the horse hair firing process and "No two pots are ever alike"! These museum quality pieces are painstakingly created incorporating balance, proportion and comfort of use. Each piece is stamped on the bottom with the Japanese character for 'Raku' and personally signed by me - Ron Aubuchon . THE HORSE HAIR PROCESS T are a variety of ways to produce horse hair pottery. The one described in is the method I use in producing these beautiful pieces of collectable art. Each piece begins its journey on the wheel and is handled between 15 to 20 times before completion. After shaping the still moist piece is scraped with a thin metal rib to remove finger marks and insure a smooth surface. Once dry it is then hand rubbed with fine steel wool to remove any scratches, blemishes or other irregularities further enhancing it's already smooth surface. The piece is then coated with several coats of 'terra sigilatta'. Each coat is allowed to dry before preceding with the next. Once the final coat is dry it is then hand burnished to give the pot a glassy sheen. No glazes are used in this process. The piece is then bisque fired to 1900 F. Once cooled it is coated with several coats of Ferric Chloride to give it the reddish color. The depth of the color depends on the number of coats of ferric chloride. I've achieved dark, brick red to light pinkish tans using this technique. The piece is then returned to the kiln and fire to 1500 F. At this temperature it is quickly removed from the hot kiln and placed on a bed of oak leaves that instantly flames and proceeds to smoke (carbonize) the bottom and sides of the piece. During the cooling down, horse hair is then applied. As it touches the hot surface it sizzles leaving behind a distinctive carbon pattern on the piece. Once cooled it is then washed in soapy water to remove any excess carbon. When dry it is then waxed and hand buffed to bring out the beauty of the piece.This method of firing results in the loss of several pieces however, those that make it through are truly 'one-of-a-kind' pieces of collectable art. Because of this stress and thermal shock that it is subject too the pieces are fragile and should be handled like fine glass and are tfore not suitable for storage of food stuff or liquids.
