This gorgeous lidded Raku piece was handmade on the potter's wheel and measures 9 1/2" tall (5 1/4" without cap and horn) by 8" wide. Its banded at the neck with bright copper wire that enhances the colors in this beautiful piece adding character as well. Its beautiful matte patina is rich with swirls of beautiful colors and bursts of rich copper that is derived from a copper rich glaze and lends to its overall beauty. Its stylized oriental designed lid tops this piece off as a true collectors item. The cap and horn were left unglazed and turned jet black during the post fire reduction. The horn is attached with bright copper wire that enhances the beauty of the piece. A great addition to any collection or a pleasing gift for a friend. The bottom is unglazed and turned black from the heavy reduction the piece was given during the post firing of the piece. Each of my pieces is signed and dated. PLEASE READ "SHIPPING INFO" BELOW BEFORE PLACING A BID! All the pieces are wheel thrown 'one-of-a-kind' hand made originals. Though some pieces may look similiar there are no moulds used in creating them - only the hands of the potter! Couple that with the unpredictability of the raku firing process and "No two pots are ever alike"! Each piece created is a unique piece of art and is personally signed on the bottom. Most pieces also have the 'Raku' symbol stamped on the bottom. All work is of gallery quality! RAKU The pots at Stonehenge are traditionally fired Raku pieces. They are bisque fired, glazed, then fired to approximately 1800 degrees F. Once that temperature is reached the piece is then quickly removed from the hot kiln with tongs and placed in a barrel of combustionable material oak leaves or straw. When placed in the barrel the material immediately burst into flames. The piece is covered with additional leaves or straw and a lid is placed on the barrel to produce an oxygen free atmosphere. After about 2 - 3 minutes the piece is then removed from the combustion chamber and plunged into cold water to prevent any further oxidation. Once cooled the piece is scrubbed to remove smoke and excess carbon revealing it's beauty. This technique of firing produces truly original "one-of-a-kind" pieces of collectable art. Raku means pleasure, happiness, contentment, and enjoyment. Each Raku pot is handled individually through out the process from raw clay to the finished pot, allowing a more intimate involvement with each pot. Because of the unpredictability of the Raku firing process no two pieces are ever alike. Participating in a Raku firing is like watching fireworks on the 4th of July! Because of the terrific stress and thermal shock the pot is subjected to during the Raku firing process cracking occurs throughout the glaze and the clay body. The cracking of the glaze acquires carbon during the reduction process, highlighting them and adding beauty to the piece.
