Offering for sale a North Carolina salt glaze jug made in either Randolph or Moore County, circa 1880 to 1900. This jug was made by one several potters that would farm, mill lumber, or be involved in other trades for part of the year, and during their off seasons would be involved in pottery production. This piece was made by a very skilled potter as can be seen when taking note of the well turned form, nicely shaped exagerated rim. and ribbed handle. The salt glaze is very evenly distributed and the wonderful fly ash accumulation on the shoulder and handle make for a nice accent. It measures 11 3/4" tall and has not cracks , hairlines , or repairs. T is a kiln drip and a 1/4" wide depression on one side and a 1/2" wide area beside the base of the handle that had a piece of kiln debris from the firing the potter just knocked off as it was taken from the kiln. Also on the bottom is a small piece of remains from the kiln floor and a very, very insignificant 1/16" wide by 3/8" long chip at the bottom edge of the base that can be seen at the 3 o'clock position when looking at the photo of the bottom. Of course none of these items detract from the piece but I try to mention as much as possible to be totally accurate in my descriptions. This piece is being offered with no reserve and please email with any questions. Thanks for looking.
