From a Great-Grandmothers Boston, Mass. Estate comes this Fantastic pair of 14k Gold Philadelphia eyeglasses! These glasses have the sliding temple arms with the tear drop ring at the end. Designed for a more comfortable fit and they worked well with the wigs worn at the time these glasses date to the early 1800's, probably around 1820. The open ends allowed a cord or ribbon to be tied to the ends and fastened around the head for a more secure fit. No telling what famous historical figure may have worn them! They are marked inside with J. Peters and Philad. Having just watched John Adams we can have a real feel for the events of the time and what it must have been like. The gold was tested with an electrical tester and a touch stone for 14k gold. The gold weight without the lenses is 7.7 grams. The slides and the hinges work great! Measures approx. 4" across and 4" long unextended, about 5 3/4" extended. A similar pair on the internet is retailing for $1350.00.
