(RESERVE ONLY 695)....This pristine, signed and dated 1700s Bucks County,Pa. sampler, descended in one of the most prominent Quaker families in the area....the WOOLSTON-SATTERTHWAITE family. Worked by 17 year old Mary Woolston in one of Pennsylvania's prominent academies, the sampler showcases an exquisitely stitched border comprised solely of queen stitch strawberries on all 3 sides....this stitch considered the most difficult of all for Am. schoolgirls to execute! This significant and historic Quaker family is listed in the records of the Middletown Meeting House in Bucks County, and the original settling immigrant to the area,Jonathan Woolston Sr.,migrated in the latter 1600s from another area concentrated with Quaker families....Burlington Co ,NJ. Our very talented samplermaker worked her inscription clearly along the bottom portion of the sampler in lieu of another border;"MARY WOOLSTON'S WORK 1793".....the date actually split up in both corners with "17" at the beginning of herrinscription, and "93" at the end. Mary was born in 1775 in Middletown,Bucks County to parents Jonathan(b.1749) and Elizabeth, the oldest of 7 children......A couple of years after her working her sampler at 19 years of age,Mary married Giles Satterthwaite on March 3,1795 at the Quaker Middletown Meeting House. This Quaker schoolgirl gem(16x18) is in pristine condition, and is conserved on acid free board in its thick, striking antique frame. A bold and dramatic horizontal band across the middle is worked in dianthus flowers, but takes 2nd stage to the queen stitch berry border! The linen is perfect with full integrity,as is all the silkwork. Signed and dated Bucks County Quaker schoolgirl samplers from the 18thC are very scarce, and hardly ever found in such excellent condition. These many rare attributes, provenance, and a below wholesale reserve of 695 make this an absolutely affordable prize for Bucks County sampler collectors,as well as those looking for American Quaker needlework examples from prominent families. (Excuse shadow left side of border in last photo from thick frame....first and last photos show most accurate color and contrast which is fabulous in person).
