Rare 17th C. Gothic Iron Pirate Chest Strongbox ~ 1650
All Original! Ever wondered what a real pirates chest looked like? Well this is the real deal, a 17th to early 18th c. iron strongbox, complete with massive locking system. Most of these were reportedly made in Nuremburg, Germany and sold throughout Europe for safe keeping of valuables. Typically these were decorated with hand painted designs, and the greens and reds are still visible behind the later paint. The locking mechanism works off one massive key and it operates 6 dead bolts that lock in sync. The mechanism is covered with an elaborately engraved metal plate. The faux front lock was used, according to legend, as a place to pack gunpowder in case a theif tried to break the lock, he would get quite a surpise! The real keyhole on the lid was covered by a moveable round plate to access the actual lock. This chest is basically complete and the mechanism works. The key is missing, and the moveable round plate. Before I purchased it, the top was forced open and the decorative plate and other pieces got bent. A good blacksmith could fabricate a key easily and repair the bent and broken pieces. I've set the mechanism so it is unlocked, and no work needs to be done unless you want to operate the lock, in which case a simple key would need to be fabricated. These chests are quite rare, and often command very high prices. T is only minor oxidation, and its possible to reveal some of the 17th c. paint decoration if you wish. Its a real piece of history!! ~ Condition is very good, sturdy, and original. The measurements are 16 1/2" high, 34" wide, and 18 1/2" deep. Shipping by our truck will be between 75.00 and 275.00 depending on location. Send us your zip for your cost and timeframe.
