Hello & Thank You for Looking, Up for Auction we have an extremely RARE Antique Flora Danica - Royal Copenhagen Pierced Fruit Saucer, handpainted by J.W. Hornemann Circa 1809-1811, (the theme of this fruit saucer is Hornemann's Purple Willowherb, the flower being named after the artist who was also a renowned botanist). This saucer is in good condition (it does have three chips on the rim - please see pics) it has been well preserved over the years. It measures 5 1/2 in diameter & is clearly marked on the bottom (please see pics). This piece comes from the estate of an hier of a Chicago aristocrat who was a very sophisticated antique collector from 1900-1920. These could possibly be the some of the earliest pieces of Flora Danica available on the net, newer versions of the fruit saucers sell for $1000 or more. We have 5 fruit saucers that we will be selling individually (please view last pic) Info about Flora Danica: A product of The Age of Enlightenment, Flora Danica is a comprehensive atlas of botany, containing folio-sized pictures of all the wild plants native to Denmark, as of 1874. It was proposed by G. C. Oeder, then professor of botany at the Botanic Garden in Copenhagen, in 1753 and was completed 123 years later, in 1883. The complete work comprises 51 parts and 3 supplements, containing 3,240 copper engraved plates. The original plan was to cover all plants, including bryophytes, lichens and fungi native to crown lands of the Danish king, that is Denmark, Schleswig-Holstein, Oldenburg-Delmenhorst and Norway with its North Atlantic dependencies Iceland, the Faroe Islands and Greenland. However, changes were made due to territorial cessations during the period of publication. After 1814, when the double monarchy of Denmarkâe"Norway was abolished, very few Norwegian plants were included, and similar changes were seen after 1864, when the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein were ceded. However, in the mid-19-century era of Scandinavism, the Nordisk Naturforskermøde in Copenhagen proposed to make Flora Danica a Scandinavian work. Thus, three supplementary volumes were issued, containing the remaining Norwegian plants and the more important plants only occurring in Sweden. J.W. Hornemann (Years) 1806-1840 - (Fascicles) 22-39 (Plates) 1261-2340 Info about Artist Jens Wilken Hornemann: (1770-1841) was a Danish botanist. He was a lecturer at the University of Copenhagen Botanical Garden from 1801. After the death of Martin Vahl in 1804, the task of publishing the Flora Danica was given to Hornemann, who subsequently issued fasc. 22-39 (1801-1840) with a total of 1080 plates. J.W. Hornemann was professor of botany at the University of Copenhagen from 1808 and director of the Botanic Garden (from 1817). One plant genus has been named in his honour: Hornemann's (Hornemanni) Purple Willowherb. He is also commemorated in the binomial of the Arctic Redpoll Carduelis hornemanni.
