Rare and important, early American Cook Book titled "The New England Economical Housekeeper, and Family Receipt Book.". By Esther Allen Howland. Worcester (Mass), 1848. published by S. A. Howland. Second Edition with "fifty new" recipes added. This fascination, Pre Civil War Cookbook measures approx. 4 1/4" x 6 7/8" and contains 108 pages with 400 cooking recipes, medicinal remedies, household hints and formula. Also present is a wonderful frontispiece plate showing a cylindrical stove set in front of a fireplace within a "frugal wife's" kitchen. The entire illustration is surrounded by elaborate and numerous printer's devices.First published in 1845, Mrs. Howland's book was very popular and was in print for at least 45 years, with variant titles, editions and revisions. It represents both a regional cookbook - New England - and one devoted to economy and frugality. This latter aspect was very common in early American cookbooks. More than half the book (275 entries) consists of cooking recipes while the remainder covers medicinal, household and morality items. Among the latter are A Hint for the Working Class, which is a tale of thrift. It begins, "If a man, twenty-one years of age, begin to save a dollar a week, and put it to interest every year, he would have, at thirty-one years of age, six hundred and fifty dollars...and at seventy-one, eleven thousand five hundred dollars." The recipes are simply and well written. The Wisconsin Loaf Bread, Caraway Cake, Soft Gingerbread, very nice, No. 5, and the Apple Pancakes all would be interesting to taste. T are 50 recipes for puddings. The Medicinal Department offers cures and helpful suggestions for treating a wide variety of ailments and problems from Asthma to Whooping-Cough. Household hints discuss how to make boots waterproof, how to remove flies from a room, how to make good black ink, how to make soft soap and how to prevent the gate from creaking, among many others. Usually found in full leather or publisher's cloth binding the example offered lacks its covers entirely. The interior pages are complete and tight including front and rear blank leaves but t is no binding present. The interior pages are complete and tight with light edge wear and foxing, age toning and scattered stains. A very rare and important 1848 American Cookbook and a fantastic addition to any Collection or Library.
