is a rare 1860's squat soda from Petroleum Center, Pa. It is aqua, measures 7 1/4" with an applied blob top and smooth hinge mold base. Embossed on the front - "Philo M. Clark" in an arch, "Oil City", "&", "Pet= Center.Pa." . The bottle was dug in the German Town area of Pittsburgh in a Civil War privy. T are no chips or cracks in the bottle. Other than some slight case wear around the base, it is just about perfect. The "PET" stands for Petroleum Center. It was an oil boom town near Titusville, Pa. and was known as one of the wickedest towns east of the Mississippi. Philo Clark was a financier and inventor during the 1800's. In 1865, he established a large bottling works at Memphis, Tenn. He went to Louisville, KY during the Civil War and opened a bottling works to supply soda water to the soldiers of the Union army. In 1865, he went to Oil City, Pa and again established a soda water works. During the panic of 1873, the price of oil dropped from $4 a barrel to $.40 a barrel so he moved on to his next venture. His bottling company was in business for about six years.
