NO RESERVE! RAREST EAPG ON EBAY!
Open Champagne Goblet , American, circa 1878 -1890
George Duncan & Sons, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Pattern: Three-Face
Acid frosted & hand etched pressed glass
Also known as Duncan No. 400, Three (3) Sisters, Three Graces, Three Faces and Three Fates. This was one of the most popular patterns of the period. First produced in 1878 by the George Duncan & Sons Glass Works (now called Duncan Miller) of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The model of the ladies face was long thought to be Elizabeth Bair, the wife of John Miller, who registered the patent in 1878. This is an example of the use of controlled acid etching, which meant only the patterned areas are exposed to the acid. This technique is commonly known as 'frosting.' This rare original period and of the era glass is guaranteed authentic. As any recognized authority of fine rare Early American Pattern Glass will tell you only the items actually produced by Duncan in the late 1800's were done with the hand etched and engraved floral and foliate border. That is the best way of determining an original from a fake as reproduction pieces have not been created with this impossible to replicate etched border. This example has a beautiful and delicate border entirely hand engraved on the plain band of flowers and fern leaves typical of all original pieces produced by the Duncan glass makers and exhibits why their works are so sought after amoungst advanced collectors. A similiar champagne glass with an engraved border sold some years ago for over $10,000 U.S. Dollars. It was a hollow stemmed example. It should be interesting to see how serious Ebay collectors are about adding this type of an outstandingly rare example of the most popular pattern in pressed glass to their collection.
