Or what?! I feel like the blind sow who's found a truffle. I hardly know w to begin except to say the piece is in fine, fine condition with no chips - no cracks - no dings - no crazing - and it stands 7 3/4" tall. Not only was it accomplish during the very earliest years of Rookwood, it is signed by, as far as I can tell, an unknown Rookwood artist: Isabella L. Candee. Was she possibly a friend of either Maria Longworth Nichols or Mary Louise McLaughlin during those early years? I simply don't know. However, I found an exciting note stuck down in the piece. (Keep your panties on. I'll show you a picture of it in a jiffy.) First, let's look at the markings and the artist's signature. "Rookwood 1883" is impressed at the bottom. Above that you can see the shape number "68" as well as a number "2" below that. Shape number 68 is illustrated in the Second Book of Rookwood Pottery . It is shown as a ewer, which came in three sizes. I'm going to assume the "2" on this piece indicates it is the one shown in the center. Now it REALLY gets exciting! The artist's signature in black is UNDER THE GLAZE, of course. But who the devil was she? See the read more
