GORGEOUS ART NOUVEAU DESIGN METTLACH # 2176 BEER STEIN WITH ORNATE PEWTER LID DATED 1899 17 INCHES TALL 3 QUART/2.8 LITERS PRINT UNDER GLAZE MARKED 954 TAVERN SCENE WITH KNIGHTS or CAVALIERS WITH SWORDS MONK, MUSICIAN & VOLUPTUOUS WOMAN GERMAN EAGLE ARTIST - HEINR SCHLITT is an absolutely gorgeous Antique and RARE Villeroy & Boch Company Mettlach Beer Stein # 2176 with Ornate Pewter Lid This is a Print Under Glaze Beer Stein of a fabulous Tavern Scene with Knights or Cavaliers with Swords, a Monk, a Musician as well as a Voluptuous Woman. T is also a German Eagle in this transfer print. The Artist is the famous Mettlach artist - Heinr Schlitt. This great old beer stein is quite large and substantial measuring 17 inches in height, has a 5 inch diameter base and holds 3 quarts or 2.8 liters. This great Antique Beer Stein has all the correct factory trademarks on the bottom - the 2-digit incised number "99" which is located to the right of and below the trademark which indicates that this fabulous Mettlach Beer Stein was manufactured in 1899. The Mettlach Old Abbey or Tower Trademark, the incised letters "VB" for Villeroy & Boch, the form number "2176", the decoration number "954" and the painted word "Geschutzt" and the incised word "Geschesch" which means Patented. T are also painter's marks in black and the control number "6". This is a very large Antique Mettlach Beer Stein which is in Excellent Condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs. T is some slight age-related crazing on the inside of the beer stein. T are a few slight scratches in the glazed transfer print, although not very noticeable needed to be mentioned for accuracy. T is some slight discoloration on the inside bottom of the stein. For an Antique Mettlach Beer Stein that is 108 years old, it is in truly great condition. The transfer print under glaze is a wonderful Tavern Scene depicting several men including 4 Knights or Cavalier swith Swords having a joyous time. T is also a Voluptuous Woman depicted, possibly a Monk and a Musician. T is also a German Eagle in this scene. The colors are absolutely gorgeous shades of cream, maroon, blue, green, gold and orange. The insciption on this beer stein reads "Wenn einem trocken die Kehle Ward" and "Under durstig leckzt nach dem nussen so istes Ritter Art" as well as Dafssienikn nicht sterben laffen". Loosely translasted, I believe it says something about the dry and thiristy throats of the Knights!! The mosaic design is from the Art Noveau era with incredible rich and deep colors of blue, tan, rust and green. T is a mosiac relief band around the top of the body of the beer stein, as well as another mosiac relief band at the bottom in a design of aqua diamonds on a gold background. That is followed by a bulbous section at the bottom of the stein with truly beautiful blue, gold and orange intricate relief designs. The footring is another relief band of mosiac designs in rust, orange and green. I surely hope the photos do this gorgeous Mettlach beer stein justice.
